Rate Methodology

How we produce the estimated rates shown in our carrier reviews, and how to read them.

Where our rate estimates come from

EasyRateFinder does not receive pricing data from insurance carriers. The rate tables in our carrier reviews are our own independent estimates, informed by NAIC rate filings and by the premium comparisons that state insurance departments publish. Many states require or invite insurers to report what they would charge a set of hypothetical drivers or homes, then publish those sample premiums so consumers can compare companies.

We use these sources to estimate what a sample profile would pay with a given carrier and how that compares with the market average for the same profile. Figures are rounded, and they are not any carrier's own price for a specific customer.

Sample profiles

Because price depends heavily on who is being insured, we estimate rates for several standard profiles, so carriers can be compared on the same basis. A few reviews add a profile specific to that carrier, such as wildfire exposure or a high-value home.

Auto profileWhat changes from the base profile
Clean recordBase profile: driver aged 30 to 45, no accidents or violations
Single accidentOne at-fault accident in the past three years
DUI on recordOne DUI conviction
Young driverDriver aged 18 to 24
Senior driverDriver aged 65 or older
Lower credit tierLower credit-based insurance score, in states where it may be used
Home profileWhat it describes
$300K or $500K dwellingDwelling coverage at that amount, no prior claims
Prior claimOne claim in the past three years
Older homeA home 40 or more years old
Coastal or wind-exposedA home in an area with elevated wind or hurricane risk
Lower credit tierLower credit-based insurance score, in states where it may be used

How to read “vs. market average”

Each table compares a carrier's estimate for a profile with the average across carriers for the same profile. “Below average” means the carrier's estimate is lower than that average; it does not mean everyone will pay less with that carrier.

Updates

We refresh estimates as new data becomes available and show the date each review was last updated. Questions about our methodology can be sent to info@easyratefinder.com.
